Frequently asked questions

My disposal hums but won't turn. Is it dead?

Usually not. A hum with no rotation normally means something is jammed. There's a reset button on the underside and most units take a hex key in the bottom to free the flywheel. If it's free and still humming, the motor is likely finished.

What shouldn't go down a disposal?

Grease is the big one — it goes down warm and solidifies further along the line, and it's a frequent cause of the recurring clogs we get called for. Fibrous vegetable waste, bones, coffee grounds and eggshells are all better in the bin than the drain.

Repair or replace?

Disposals are generally replaced rather than repaired, since the unit cost is low relative to the labor of rebuilding one. Jams, resets and drain connections are worth fixing; a failed motor or a leaking body isn't.
