How long should an air conditioner last?
Commonly ten to fifteen years, and maintenance moves that meaningfully. A unit that's had annual attention and clean coils will generally outlast an identical one that hasn't by a wide margin.
Should I replace the furnace at the same time?
If both are of a similar age, it's often worth considering — they share the blower and ductwork, and doing them together avoids paying twice for overlapping labor. If your furnace has plenty of life left, there's no need, and we'll say so.
Do I need a bigger unit if the house never cools properly?
Not necessarily, and jumping to a larger system is a common and expensive mistake. Poor cooling is often duct problems, airflow restriction or a refrigerant leak. Oversized equipment short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly and wears out faster. We calculate the load before recommending a size.
